Orthopedic impairment is quite a general term, as IDEA defines it as an impairment that severely affects a child’s educational performance which can include “ impairments caused by a congenital anomaly, impairments caused by disease (e.g., poliomyelitis, bone tuberculosis), and impairments from other causes (e.g., cerebral palsy, amputations, and fractures or burns that cause contractures).” The broadness means that there are several students who can be categorized under an orthopedic impairment, which still requiring highly individualized educational services. In addition, finding resources for this impairment can mean learning more about cerebral palsy, birth defects, spina bifida, and other impairments of the sort. In cases such as these, it is best to learn exactly what disability your student has and create a support team for differentiation strategies. The Ohio Department of Education offers great strategies and techniques to support students, as well as provides a list of resources from national organizations. http://education.ohio.gov/Topics/Special-Education/Students-with-Disabilities/Orthopedic-Impairment |
