Multiple DisabilitiesUnfortunately, not all students who are disabled have a single disability. There are some students who suffer from “multiple disabilities” which IDEA describes as “concomitant impairment (such as mental retardation-blindness or mental retardation-orthopedic impairment), the combination of which causes such severe educational needs that they cannot be accommodated in special education programs solely for one of the impairments.” With the push for inclusion of disabled students, there has also been an increase in the resources available for teachers… however they are difficult to find. One such resource is the Head Start website, as created by the United States Department and Human Services. There is a section in the website titled “T/TA Resources” which includes characteristics, medical implications, tips and classroom strategies, appropriate collaborative teams, and communication guides.
