Individuals with Disabilities Education Act in 2016In 1990, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was passed in the United States, which required schools to provides students with disabilities with the educational accommodations and modifications they need to succeed. IDEA has been revised and reauthorized multiple times to ensure success, and one of the more recent changed has emphasized the inclusion of students with special needs into the mainstream classroom. This means that general education teacher find themselves needing to learn more about the disabilities that affect their students, and implement the appropriate modifications and accommodations to support their students in the classroom. Currently, there are fourteen disabilities defined by the act, and they are:
